Manhattan was in lockdown, with police swarming everywhere, and people were told by the authorities to run and hide inside their homes. So we decided to stay in Brooklyn and project on one of it’s most iconic and most loved buildings: the Brooklyn Academy of Music. BAM didn’t know about it, and at first security was suspicious, but as soon as they saw the message, they embraced us with approval. Even police officers who drove by gave us a warm nod and beep. It was a sweet moment when we saw a plea for peace trump the rules…

Someone eighteen years old, embarking on an academic career, might well ask: Will this world welcome me, welcome my potential abilities? Or am I being trained for a life on a hamster wheel? Is my value simply the value of a hamster that can run, a bioform for the Matrix to plug into and extract my essence for the benefit of a larger machine? Is this world full of possibilities, is it asking me to contribute, welcoming my contribution, valuing me for the things known and unknown that I may one day be able to contribute? Or am I being wronged from the start, treated as a “customer,” which all too often means, alas, someone to fleece?

Is the world full of smart and welcoming adults who are interested in what I have to say, encouraging me to work hard and learn and try things, or is it full of thieves and charlatans who are out to rip me off and saddle me with debt and enslave me before I even get a chance to start my adult life??

Let’s consider this from the educator’s point of view, as well. Doesn’t the quality of a culture rely in part on a deep, dynamic interaction between those who are adults now, and those who will be soon?…

Let me suggest that it’s not the young workers who are being trained wrong.

It’s only when the heart begins to beat wildly and without pattern — when it begins to realize its boundlessness — that its newly adamant pulse bangs on the walls of its cage and is bruised by its enclosure.

To feel the heart pound is only the beginning. Next is to feel the hurt — the tearing of the psyche — the prelude of entry into the place one has always feared. One fears that place because of being drawn to it, loving it, and wanting to be taught by it. Without the need to be taught, who would feel the psyche rip?…. Without the bruise, who would know where the walls are?

Everybody I know hates their telecom companies. It is an area that needs challengers that can make the big companies scared and nicer to their customers. There are smaller, shrewd companies with some good ideas but I am doubtful an upstart has enough firepower to deal with the Telecom Cartel since it is so hard to acquire cellular towers. It will take an integrated, scaled company with complimentary assets to impact the Telecom Cartel.

One company that can take them on is Microsoft. Well, I shouldn’t say take on. What I have envisioned for while is Microsoft providing wifi to the public and littering them all along the country like Johnny Appleseed. It seems they are thinking about this too. The missing piece here are places to put the wifi boxes. By combining small, strategic real estate investments with wireless capabilities, they could provide a cheap alternative to telecom companies, which will lock people into skype and serve as the launching pad for their mobile system. It can simultaneously undercut every competing OS.

A wildcard up their sleeve is that their founder and adviser, Paul Allen, owns Vulcan Inc, an investment company that has experience with real estate, wireless spectrum and may be able to help streamline this shift for them.

unconsumption:

A new class of electronics can dissolve and disappear on a pre-set schedule, within a few minutes or a few years, depending on when you want them to go away.

They could live in the body and deliver drugs, they could stick on the exterior of buildings or tanks, and they can become compost instead of metal scrap—in other words, they turn the common conception of electronics completely upside down.

Transient electronics, as they’ve been dubbed, are a combination of silk and silicon designed to work seamlessly in our bodies and in our environments.

In a new study, researchers built a thermal device designed to monitor infection in a rodent and a 64-pixel digital camera—all from dissolvable material.

Fascinating! What if your old cellphone just disappeared? “Dissolvable material” seems kinda freaky, but … maybe a good thing if it’s real??

As the world transitioned from the depths of the dark ages, a Florentine family rose to business and political prominence. In the late 14th century the House of Medici established themselves as a political dynasty and banking powerhouse which grew to become the largest bank in all of Europe for…

The community wouldn’t be the same as Instagram but I feel like there’s a decent amount of cross over between users anyway, so there is a larger likelihood of adoption.

With the t.co wrapper they can easily index a majority of images shared. For users looking to build influence, especially brands, this specific stream is an extra avenue of exposure. Picture sharing seems to be a reliant tool for engagement and can be a way to leverage the brand partnerships they are building

crushabledotcom:

Everyone has the opportunity to express themselves and make a difference. There is the 80-20 rule that states the 80% of the content is made by 20% of the people. I disagree with that. Whether you know it or not, you are a creator. You are a creator every time you post on facebook and a curator every time you re- tweet, tumble, or pin. This is without mentioning more explicit acts of creation such as blogging or uploading your work onto youtube. For most, these are activities squeezed into the normalness that working to support yourself entails.

Even better than expressing yourself and doing what you love is making a living doing what you love or loving your lifestyle. Services like etsy and the kindle platform allow you to make a living off of your art. Ebay, craigslist, and wordpress have laid out the infrastructure to sustain hassle free businesses for scores of people to live the lifestyle they want. The most exciting to me are philanthropic, investing networks that enable others to create sustainable businesses. kickstarter, kiva, and angel.co are 3 of this type that stand out to me.

In an age of abundance we can pursue our passions. Not only that, we can live off our passions by monetizing them, The economy is bad and attention is scarce, so you may not make a lot of money, but you can subsidize your other expenses. It never hurts to have diverse revenue streams. Better than making money, you will have spent more of your time doing something you actually love. That is the ideal world for me. I think we should make as many moments as possible the fullest expression of who we are.

"The mind is its own place, and in itself
